July 23 (Wednesday) - arrive 7:30 am for tide action to ?? (2 pm - see description)
Giant Stairs Trailhead, Bailey’s Island, Harpswell Rain Date July 24
23 Washington Ave, Bailey Island, ME 04003
Location and description: Giant Stairs trailhead, Bailey's Island, Harpswell. Enjoy painting a geologist’s and artist’s dream on a very unique trail of the rocky coastline of Casco Bay. The shoreline views East to the open ocean and rising sun. Large cracks of hulking magma and dark basalt rock against quartz and granite lead to the crashing waves peaking before the morning high tide at 10:30 AM, particularly at the actual giant stairs location along the walking path. Rafts of ducks, harbor seals, casting fishermen, lobster boats hauling their traps and distant sail boats. Some lovely old homes and flowers are along the shore.
Parking A: 2-3 cars may park at the Episcopal Church, 23 Washington Ave, Harpswell.
Parking B: 400 feet south on Washington Ave., signs identify roadside parking for the walking trail.
Bathrooms: The Orr’s island Library 1699 Harpswell Islands Rd, Orr's Island, ME 04066
Amenities: Bailey's Island General Store is just north on Rt 24.
Miscellaneous: The library has hosted us before. We may gather there at the end of the day for a friendly sharing of the day's work. Alternative suggested sites include: Land's End at the end of the road, The Cribstone Bridge between Orr's and Bailey's Islands.
